Wikipedia Asian Month is an annual online event that aims to promote Asian content in Wikipedia. Since 2015, each participating local community runs an online Edit-a-thon every November, which promotes the creation or improvement of the Wikipedia content about Asia except their own country. The participating community is not limited to Asia. In past 4 years, over 28, 00 high quality articles were created on more than 60 Wikipedia projects by more than 2,000 Wikipedia editors.

Expanding Wikipedia African Month?

[edit]

Hello! I've somewhat recently – around the time latest Asian WAM contest was held – found out about Wikipedia African Month that takes place each May since 2019. It doesn't seem to have caught on much outside of Romance-speaking projects (exc. Chinese and Esperanto). I plan organizing this edit-a-thon on my local project (Serbo-Croatian) and influence Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian communities to do the same. It would definitely help if English Wikipedia supported this initiative on its own project.

https://theconversation.com/geotagging-reveals-wikipedia-is-not-quite-so-equal-after-all-30550: Almost all of Africa is poorly represented in the encyclopedia, too. In fact, there are more Wikipedia articles written about Antarctica (14,959) than any country in Africa. And while there are just over 94,000 geotagged articles related to Japan, there are only 88,342 on the entire Middle East and North Africa region.

Geographic imbalance has to be fought. Africa is the second largest continent in both area and population, but dead last in coverage on Wikipedia. This is why I think WAfM needs to spread. I'm posting this here because I'm not sure where else to ask for help. WAsM organizers might be the most interested in this kind of an initiative. -Vipz (talk) 06:46, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
