Hello, ToadetteEdit. Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum if you need help with something (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Also worthwhile acquainting yourself with the functions of global user pages. Happy editing!

Re: your comments when withdrawing your request for global rollback

[edit]

Hi ToadetteEdit,

I don't think we've interacted much (or at all) outside of your RFGR. I noticed that you said you were sad that the request failed, and didn't understand why it failed while the others were passing. Since you don't have much experience in global activities on Wikimedia, I thought I'd leave a comment giving some advice - you are free to ignore this if you wish.

Both your enwiki RfA and RFGR demonstrate a slight lack of understanding of what the community looks for in advanced permissions holders. Enwiki RfA is a mess on a good day so I won't speak to that, but at SRGP, voters typically look for people who are in good standing on their home project who have then moved to global work and got a lot of experience there. The "career path" for users involved in global work almost always involves becoming either a sysop or very trusted user on their home project, then moving into global work connected to their area of expertise locally. For example, I started off on various Wikia (now Fandom) projects doing counter-vandalism, moved to global counter-vandalism on Wikia, then moved to global counter-vandalism here. The permissions I was entrusted with over the years complimented this natural development of my wiki-work, and showed an increasing development of trust (being trusted locally, then moving to the global level). At no point did I request global permissions that I wouldn't have been trusted with on my home project.

I know it probably seems unfair that the community is not voting for you in various contexts, but it is really quite important to step back and reflect on why that is. There is always a reason for it, and in that reason is a way for you to improve. I suggested this on the RFGR, but I would really recommend that you stop requesting new permissions and focus on an area or two that you really like. Become an expert at those things - demonstrate your competence, then move into other functions that build on that expertise. Otherwise you will likely continue to encounter these setbacks, and may even end up at ANI on enwiki if people feel like you still aren't understanding your mistakes. Don't worry about requesting advanced permissions - the permissions will follow as you develop trust and expertise in your chosen areas. I would recommend waiting until someone trusted suggests it before applying for more advanced permissions, and I would avoid the impression that you are just editing to eventually gain advanced access in the future.

I think you have all the makings of a very productive contributor across Wikimedia, so keep up the good work! But I do think it would do you well to put some thought into this, while this is still a relatively small problem. – Ajraddatz (talk) 17:00, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

This has gotten real; I am now subject to an ANI discussion. ToadetteEdit (talk) 08:36, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
