Malafeev later became the first choice goalkeeper for Zenit in 2001, efter Berezovsky left the club. On 19 November 2003, Malafeev debuted as a goalkeeper for the naitional team in a Euro 2004 qualifiers play-off against Wales. He wis chosen as the seicont choice goalkeeper behind Sergei Ovchinnikov an ahead of Igor Akinfeev. Malafeev participated in Euro 2004 coming on efter Ovchinnikov's reid card against Portugal an stairtin against Greece.

Efter Euro 2004, Malafeev, became the first choice goalkeeper for Roushie succeeding Ovchinnikov. Efter a lang-term injury in May 2005, Malafeev lost his place in the goal for Zenit an Roushie tae Kamil Čontofalský an Igor Akinfeev, respectively. In 2007, played in twa Euro 2008 qualifiers against Andorra an Croatia efter Akinfeev's lang term injury but wis relegatit tae the bench in favour o Vladimir Gabulov. Efter Zenit's successfu UEFA Cup campaign he lost a nairae battle wi Igor Akinfeev for the first choice goalkeeper spot in Roushie's Euro 2008 squad. Nonetheless, he stayed on the as the seicont choice goalkeeper ahead of Gabulov.

He wis the stairtin goalkeeper in the gemme that Roushie lost tae Portugal wi a score of 1–7 in the 2006 FIFA Warld Cup qualifier.[1]

He wis confirmed for the finalized UEFA Euro 2012 squad on 25 May 2012.[2] Efter the UEFA Euro 2012 he annoonced that he is retiring frae the national team tae spend mair time wi his childer, but is prepared tae be cried up in case of emergency sic as injuries tae ither tap goalkeepers.[3]
