“The stone arch was originally built to welcome King George V to his Indian colony in 1911. In those days, most visitors, including the British Royals, arrived by boat. As Bombay is India's most important port, it is naturally the first place the King would land. For this reason it was named the Gateway to India. British rule was known as "The Raj".”
Pamphlet, Mario is Missing! (PC)

The Gateway of India is an arch monument in Bombay, India that was constructed as a welcome to King George V in the early 20th century. It appears in Mario is Missing! as a visitable location. The Gateway of India closes when a Koopa Troopa steals the Indian Flag but reopens after Luigi returns the item.
