Happy holidays
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, Basile!
The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about holiday cards and social media. It occurred to me that, in the years since I left Facebook, the site I use most to communicate with people I like isn't actually a social media site at all. If you're receiving this, it's pretty likely I've talked with you more recently than I have my distant relatives and college friends on FB, at very least, and we may have even collaborated on something useful. So here's a holiday "card", Wikimedia friend. :) Hope the next couple weeks bring some fun and/or rest. — Rhododendrites talk | 19:52, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Rhododendrites,
- Thank you very much for your friendly card and text. It was really a pleasure to discover it on my talk page this morning (now here in Laos it's evening, and the reason I'm late to answer is just it was a busy day).
- I share the same as you, concerning Facebook, I was a regular user a few days ago (before 2017), and I totally quitted the system. At this time I was not sure if it would be a definitive decision or not, but 6 years later I realize that I don"t really miss Mark Zuckerberg's company :-) Except for a group I enjoyed due to its specialized subject, the daily likes / smileys that all the "friends" shared everyday do not represent an insurmountable lack in my routine :-) And I'm happy not to see the commercial advertisements displayed on my browser or mobile phone anymore! The last message I sent to my "friends" & relatives was that on Facebook I felt like a child, and that this infantilization bored me. No regret!
- Now I spend more time on Wikimedia Commmons, and, sometimes Wikipedia. It's very nice and very interesting, provided one measures the dose of screen in front of the eyes, per day.
- The picture you share, created by the AI program DALL-E is fascinating. I discovered this website recently (unfortunately not available in Laos). The images in the category captivated me several times for very long minutes. This is extraordinary, in my view. The question of original "Art" is becoming complex. Before, there was the website thispersondoesnotexist.com creating portraits, and it was (is) already incredible, but DALL-E is one step further, I find. Rich automated creativity.
- I wish you a very nice end of year too!
- All the best, --Basile Morin (talk) 14:45, 23 December 2022 (UTC)
- I don't miss Facebook much, either. There are people I don't connect with much since I left, but Facebook was the only place we did connect, so I don't know how much of a loss that really is. Regarding AI art (or "art"), I've been using it a lot in my PowerPoint presentations, etc., too. Easy way to quickly tailor the subject to the audience. Maybe it's the new Hallmark Cards -- translating whatever strange sentiment is in our hearts into visuals for a special occasion. :) — Rhododendrites talk | 16:44, 23 December 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, the applications of this new technology can be various and clever. Your prompt was luminous too! Like 25 years ago, when the computer got better and better every year, we should expect the same with AI in the future. Thanks again, Rhododendrites. Merry Christmas! -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:37, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
