Dromon

Dromon (od grčkog "trkač") je naziv za najvažniji ratni brod bizantske ratne mornarice od 6. do 12. vijeka. Dromoni su se razvili od drevnih trirema te su za pogon koristili vesla i jedra.

Gradili su se u raznim oblicima i veličinama, te su bili dugi između 30 i 50 metara, odnosno široki između 5 i 7 metara. Imali su oko 300 članova posade, uključujući marince i veslače.

Dromoni su imali središnji toranj (xylokastron = drveni toranj) blizu glavnog jarbola, odakle su marinci mogli neprijatelja gađati strijelama, kopljima i drugim projektilima. Većina dromona bila je opremljena s drevnim plamenobacačima (syphonopho-rami) koji su po neprijatelju djelovali s grčkom vatrom te katapultima koji su mogli projektile od 500 kg izbaciti na daljinu od 1000 metara. Mnogi dromoni su bili oklopljeni, kako bi se zaštititili od neprijateljskog kljunovog udara.
