Otahalli is a sports venue in Otaniemi, Espoo, Finland. It is located by the sea in Otaniemi, adjacent to the Aalto University campus.[1]

History

[edit]

When completed, Otahalli was the largest indoor sports venue in Finland.[1] It was designed by architect Alvar Aalto and built in 1952 as part of the preparations for the Helsinki Olympics.[2]

Design & architecture value

[edit]

Aalto's design is notable for its long wooden truss that spans 45 metres (148 ft).[3] The materials used in the winding stairways and wooden roof structures represent Aalto's elegant functionalism.[4]

Sports activities

[edit]

Otahalli hosts in premises Unisport service provider, which resells sports activities to public.[5]

Espoo Tapiot also uses Otahalli as home sports arena. It is one of Finland's leading athletics clubs with around 1300 members. Espoo's Tapiot engages both youth and adults, from amateurs to experts.[6]

Also it hosts Westend Indians sports club as their home arena.[7]

Non-sport activities

[edit]

On November 10, 2022, Otahalli had been hosting Aalto Talent Expo 2022 by Aalto University Student Union. 128 employer organizations had joined the event for students from all Aalto University schools.[8]
