Needs a rewrite

[edit]

In common with most other articles on faulting, this needs a rewrite. It repeats parts of other articles and is unclear in parts and incorrect in others. For example, earthquakes are not the result of grinding of the fault walls as they move, it's a result of the sudden release of stored elastic strain energy when the fault ruptures after a period of being "locked". We certainly don't need multiple diagrams of faults (I'm aware that I recently added one of those, but hopefully the reasons for that are obvious). I'm not sure that we need anything more than a brief description of the fault types, rather than repeating everything that's in the main fault article. Then there's fault mechanics to sort out.
