  • It is believed the sabotage was carried out by Mossad, in retaliation for the pro-Libyan Italian government's decision to expel, rather than try, five arabs who had tried to blow up an Israeli airliner. The Arabs had been spirited out of the country on board the Argo 16.

Believed by who? This is unsourced nonsense.--Cuchullain 19:10, September 5, 2005 (UTC)

  • This is unsourced, but it is not nonsense. The former president Cossiga stated that the plane was downed as "a revenge from the israeli secret service" in a TV interview (released to the most famous recent history themed program on the national TV, La Sotoria siamo noi). The former general of counterespionage Maletti stated to the newspaper Repubblica that Israeli government happened to discover (due to a technical stop in Malta) a secret mission to repatriate some Libyan terrorists, and that the bombing was an announced retaliation brought forth after his refusal to hand the terrorists over to Tel Aviv. --Jollyroger (talk) 14:55, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
