A Little Assistance?

[edit]

I's like to improve this article, but this would be my first sort of big undertaking, could anyone out there give me a hand? Tell me where to start even? A list, perhaps? Thanks Paul5121 (talk) 01:38, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Style section

[edit]

The style section in this article is a joke, I'm going to change it later. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paul5121 (talkcontribs) 14:20, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Additions and his name

[edit]

Added some info regarding the other play he wrote for kids and the movie his brother wrote that was released this summer in Ireland. His brother's name is Mark Doherty, suggesting David added the "O'" to his name for musical effect. Anybody have reference evidence for this?--JJ was here (talk) 21:27, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's the other way around - Mark dropped the 'O' from his name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.41.19.21 (talk) 21:50, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Alex Lyons of The Irish Times, in an article bemoaning the state of Irish comedy, describes David O'Doherty favourably as "Comedy gold written on fine quality, mad music sheets." Might be worth trying to fit that bit of praise into the article. -- 109.76.147.160 (talk) 13:00, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the IPA pronunciation of his name. David pronounces the "h" in his surname like the "ch" in "loch", which in IPA is /x/. Here is a link to an episode of 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83XmFX71qzs. The announcer says his name at about 0:43 and Jimmy Carr says it again at about 8:07; both times, and every other time I have heard his name said, the "h" is pronounced /x/.2601:244:4400:DE00:DC08:E5CC:DD12:B5B4 (talk) 19:57, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That is certainly how presenters in the UK and even his celebrity friends in the UK seem to pronounce it, but it's not necessarily how *he* pronounces it. O'Doherty in Ireland doesn't have a loch-style 'ch'. O'Docherty might, but you don't meet so many people with that name in Ireland.
Here's how it's pronounced on RTÉ, with a simple 'h' sound, no 'ch' sound.

I might change this shortly. I'll just see if there's a recording of the man himself saying his name. Tomasrojo (talk) 13:53, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, there he is at the start o this clip, talking about the David O'Doherty foundation. No 'ch' sound.
