Expanding the knowledge base: The importance of creating a 'Humanitarian assistance' wiki page

[edit]

I am planning to create a new wiki article titled "Humanitarian assistance" and break the current redirect to "Humanitarian aid." After reviewing several key documents, including the OCHA Strategic Plan 2023-2026, the EU's humanitarian action communication, and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, I believe that having a separate article for humanitarian assistance is important for several reasons.

Firstly, while humanitarian aid and assistance are often used interchangeably, they are distinct concepts. Humanitarian aid generally refers to short-term relief, such as providing food, water, shelter, and medical care in crisis situations. On the other hand, humanitarian assistance encompasses a broader range of activities, including longer-term support for recovery, rehabilitation, and capacity building. The OCHA Strategic Plan clearly highlights this distinction, and I think it's crucial to provide users with a clear understanding of the differences between these terms.

Secondly, a dedicated article on humanitarian assistance will allow for a more comprehensive exploration of the topic. This will include discussing the various forms of assistance, the organizations involved, and the principles and standards that guide these efforts, such as humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence, as outlined in the Fundamental Principles document. The EU's communication also emphasizes the importance of humanitarian assistance complementing and supporting States' responsibilities rather than undermining or supplementing them. I believe this context is essential for users to grasp the full scope of humanitarian assistance.

Lastly, creating a separate article will improve search results for users specifically seeking information on humanitarian assistance. It will also allow for better linking between related content, such as the existing article on humanitarian aid, enabling users to navigate between these connected but distinct concepts more easily.
