Politics

[edit]

I wonder if something should be mentioned about Beck's politics. She is not known as a political figure, but her family is known in political circles, with her Republican governor uncle. She gave an opening prayer at a Trump campaign rally in Salt Lake City on October 26, 2016.[1][2] Mike Pence was there, not Trump, on a mission to call Utah Republicans to "come home". I do not think she noticeably helped Trump's comfortable win in Utah, but some bloggers commented about it as incongruent at a time when some Mormons were publicly questioning Trump's morals and principles.[3][4] This was less than 3 weeks after the "Access Hollywood Tape", when five Mormon congressmen withdrew endorsement and a Deseret News editorial called for Trump's withdraw.[5] News had already been reporting how Mormons might dislike Trump's morality, rhetoric, and positions against Muslims and immigrants.[6] Trump said Utah was a real problem [7] and Pence went there to address it. Amidst all that, Beck's prayer was seen as placing an LDS leader in a public political act in favor of party loyalty, although it wasn't mentioned in the reports by KSL or the Deseret News. (Robert C. Oaks, an emeritus GA and retired general, delivered a speech at that rally, but he had long been active in publicly supporting Trump.)

I don't know what, if anything, should be said of these events. But I put my thoughts here, in case it seems relevant to her as a public figure. ——Rich jj (talk) 15:46, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
