I was just wondering why this article gets sorted under 'K' in the 'chess writers' category, rather than under 'W', since his last name starts with 'W'. Cheers, FrankEldonDixon 18:08, 5 October 2007 (UTC) FrankEldonDixon, Frank Dixon, Kingston, Canada (Oct. 5, 2007, 1408 EDT (GMT +5)[reply]

  • By default, category sorts are done by the unadulterated page name. This is suboptimal for many pages, especially biographies. Category sorts can be specified on the right side of a pipe, e.g., [[Category:Chess writers|Whyld, Ken]]. (This is yet a different use for the pipe, which has a different function in piped wikilinks and yet another function in piped wikitable syntax.) Since many pages have a lot of categories, it is tedious and error prone to specify the sort over and over again. Recently DEFAULTSORT has been added to allow changing the default sort for all categories on the page: {{DEFAULTSORT:Whyld, Ken}}. This also has the side benefit of making the sorting for categories added automatically through templates used on the page (like {{chess-bio-stub}}) sort more usefully. This page hadn't been updated to use DEFAULTSORT yet. I fixed it. Quale 18:37, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Chess Importance

[edit]

Upgraded to High from Mid due to high linkage (currently 102 links) to article. ChessCreator (talk) 16:41, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changed back to mid after finding most of the links appear to be in references sections for books. ChessCreator (talk) 23:44, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's hardly surprising as he wrote books on chess history! Carcharoth (talk) 18:55, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Probably almost all of the links are due to him being a coauthor of The Oxford Companion to Chess, which is widely referenced. So I agree with Mid importance. Bubba73 (talk), 02:56, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Changed it to Low importance. There are a lot of links to him due to coauthoring the Oxford Companion, but otherwise not that important. Bubba73 (talk), 20:16, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
