Expansion work

[edit]

Expansion request: we need a list of winners. Possibly modeled on the table in Kodansha Manga Award. Wikilinked to the manga and artist articles, of course, which articles then need to have the appropriate mention and added. —Quasirandom 14:53, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can help fill out the form, and get the wikilinks (provided people have remembered to make the from the jwikipedia to the correct English page) but I'm going to leave it up to you to go put the appropriate mention on the individual pages. Doceirias 23:23, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I've been spending more time poking at doing just that for the Kodansha awards. —Quasirandom 23:39, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yay filling in. That went faster than expected. I start going through the entries, seeing if we can't match more wikilinks up, and adding the information on articles that do exist, over the next week or so. —Quasirandom 03:14, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There -- finished going through wikilinked titles & artists, adding mention of award and a category. *whew* —Quasirandom 00:34, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, in case my rationale for wikilinking isn't clear, if I find that somewhere on Wikipedia, someone has already wikilinked to a empty article on the mangaka or title, I've been wikilinking it here as well -- by way of showing it's already recognized as a wikigap. Or to put it another way, this is by way of showing what's higher priority. —Quasirandom 00:13, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Which reminds me: Doceirias, which source did you use for filling out the table? Could you cite it as a reference? —Quasirandom 17:35, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just used the Japanese wikipedia page, I'm afraid. Doceirias 18:37, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Does the Official Website list the winners? —Quasirandom 18:51, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, here [1] Doceirias 19:17, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Coo. I've cited it, in admittedly a rather kuldgy format, but I couldn't think of a better way. (Can you say "Cleanup needed," boys and girls? I knew you could!) —Quasirandom 19:29, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Next expansion task: full out that stub of an introduction, with an emphasis on bringing out the prestiege of this award. Once I finish working through the table cleanup/adding the award to the winners' articles, I'll take a stab at cannibalizing from the German wikipedia article, but if anyone wants to jump in first, feel free. —Quasirandom 14:41, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, also, we need to list the "special awards" the intro mentions. (Maybe I should set up a to-do list...) —Quasirandom 01:00, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Award for person or work?

[edit]

Can somebody clarify whether the award is given to the artist (for the work(s) cited) or the work (identified with the artist)? I ask, because the citations in the German Wikipedia article are to the artist, not to the work as we're doing here. Other references about the Web are similarly ambiguous, and I alas cannot check the official site to confirm one way or another. —Quasirandom 07:30, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just to tie this off, discussion on this has been held over here. —Quasirandom 04:14, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Catching up on citations

[edit]

As a result of this AfD, I'm starting a pass to reference all the awards in the recipiant articles. Which I should have done when I added mentions in the articles. Along the way, I plan to create stubs of all the mangakas without articles, as best I can. I leave stubs for works to others, as I've less information in English for most of those. —Quasirandom (talk) 19:30, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shogakukan Manga Award box for each Category

[edit]

Most of the Shagakukan manga award winner's ja page have a Shogakukan Manga Award box for each Category. Wonder if we could make a similar system? Extremepro (talk) 08:14, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A succession box, those seem to be called. The style on English wikipedia is to use those more for political offices. For awards significant enough where every winner can be defined as notable for having won it, the style seems to be a navbox linking to all the winners -- and that's a whole lotta redlinks right now, which are seriously frowned upon in navboxes. To be honest, I don't think we're ready to be thinking about it -- a bigger priority would be to work on developing articles. —Quasirandom (talk) 15:54, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll help with developing the articles, sure Extremepro (talk) 21:36, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Categorisation

[edit]

Wonder if we could make a and so on for the winner of the award? I'm basing this on the "Category:Winner of Kodansha (category)" system. Or should we use this ? Extremepro (talk) 21:45, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There used to be those, but they were deleted a few months ago as duplicative of the list. Someone was supposed to extend and put up the Kodansha ones, but no one got around to it. —Quasirandom (talk) 23:10, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mangaka name check please

[edit]

This article lists the mangaka of the Tale of Genji that won in 1989 as Miyako Maki; the The Tale of Genji (manga) that is linked to is listed as by Waki Yamato. Does the article get the name wrong (misreading of kanji perhaps?) or are these two different series? —Quasirandom (talk) 14:26, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Two different series - the manga linked is not even called the Tale of Genji in Japanese. Far more disturbing is the Japanese list of winners, which has these titles listed in 1988, and the awards around them off a year from ours. Yikes. Doceirias (talk) 15:24, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Let me guess: we list them by the year they're announced for works published in the year before, while in Japanese they use the year of publishing. *facepalm* —Quasirandom (talk) 15:50, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So what should the article for the series Asakiyumemishi be titled? What's the literal translation of the Japanese title? —Quasirandom (talk) 15:53, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will creat the page. My direct translation of Asaki yume mishi is I had a light dream.--Bukubku (talk) 03:27, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Year Issue

[edit]

The disagreement seems to be over whether the year is when awarded in January or the publication in the year before. Currently, the list matches the English language source in the References. —Quasirandom (talk) 02:17, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Awards are generally given for the preceeding year; is that was the reference says? Doceirias (talk) 05:48, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Awards are given in January for the best comics produced during the preceeding year. The Japanese references don't list any year for the prizes (only "first time", "second time" and so on). One site[2] states that it was established in 1955 (この賞は健全明瞭な少年少女向け漫画の振興をはかるため、昭和30年に設けられました。). (212.247.11.156 (talk) 19:13, 20 December 2009 (UTC))[reply]
And the answer is given in the discussion on the talk page at Japanese Wikipedia... Basically, there's a piece of text on Shōgakukan's web site that I didn't notice. Japanese Wikipedia talks about the situation back in 2007, but I'm using the current (2009) text. On an image, it says "Shōgakukan's 55th comics prize (year 2009)" (第55回(平成21年度)小学館漫画賞, Dai gojūgo kai (Heisei nijūichi nendo) Shōgakukan mangashō). So the 55th prize is the 2009 prize, and the 55th prize is the one that will be presented in January 2010.
By the way, I really think that Wikipedia should number the prizes from 1 to 54 in the list in this article. At least on Japanese web sites, the prizes usually seem to be referred to by the number and by the year. (212.247.11.156 (talk) 19:24, 20 December 2009 (UTC))[reply]

So the award was first given in 1956? Because the lead says 1955. Cattus talk 13:38, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The award was first given in 1956 for the year 1955, so the lead is correct...assuming what I said is correct. Doceirias (talk) 13:59, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying this. I didn't know what year to put on the infobox :) Cattus talk 15:44, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since Shōgakukan's image lists the prizes by the years during which the comics were first published, I have adjusted the table to show these years. I have also added a comment above the table, explaining what the years mean. Various sources (for example Shōgakukan's list of the laureates) list the prizes by numbers and not by years. For that reason, I have also added the relevant numbers to the table. (212.247.11.156 (talk) 22:15, 26 December 2009 (UTC))[reply]
