Seems to me "believed by many to have built and operated the first horseless carriage in the USA" is giving credence to rumor and anecdote, and contradicts the 1890s dates for Duryea brothers and R.E. Olds. Suggest it be deleted. --squadfifteen, 17/10/05

deleted - linked to bio of Elwood Haynes instead. Suggested this comment be taken to that page, if it's still an issue. — Graibeard 23:02, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Under "properties," the last part reads:

Stellite® alloys also tend to have extremely high melting points due to the cobalt and chromium content. poo.

"Poo?"

how heavy is this alloy?

[edit]

If anybody has any idea how heavy this alloy is please leave the info. here,I do not have a sample of it so I have no idea myself of it's weight. Thank you for any help you can give on this alloy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.29.57.128 (talk) 16:19, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Poppet valves vs. slide valves

[edit]

"Stellite was a major improvement in the production of poppet valves and valve seats in internal combustion engines; by reducing wear in them, the competing slide-valve design was driven from the market."

AFAIK, stellite was never employed in steam engines (poppet valves or otherwise) where the slide valve was a credible alternative. Its use in internal combustion engines began around the mid-1930s (from Rod Banks' autobiog) which is long after the poppet valve was ubiquitous. The only "slide valve" used for IC engines in this period would have been sleeve valves (e.g. Bristol radial aero-engines) and these were finally driven out by their own problems, not by Stellite.

So what does this sentence mean, and does it really mean anything accurate, referenceable and encyclopedic? Andy Dingley (talk) 00:14, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

stellite composition

[edit]

to say that stellite is a substance using four to six elements from a list of thirteen seems to be saying nothing of any consequence. john f92.40.230.94 (talk) 09:53, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge with Cobalt-chrome

[edit]

Both articles seem to concern same alloys { } 03:41, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. They're a subset, not the same thing. Stellites are a highly notable group that warrant their own article. They also contain much more as a proportion than merely cobalt and chrome. A merged article could be a good article, but that's unlikely on WP. Simply throwing the content from one article into another does not have a good track record for improving anything.
