My naive sense of how public domain works

[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you recently uploaded Image:Walkercolt.jpg labeled as PD-self, and are now trying to withdraw the release into the public domain. Unfortunately, I'm fairly sure this isn't possible. After you have released the image into PD, you no longer have any claim on it in order to possibly withdraw the PD status. It's a sorta' irrevocable thing. I'm happy to help you with any other problems you have, however. Cheers. lifebaka++ 15:03, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, Lifebaka beat me to this. I'm afraid that you cannot revoke the grant of license, it's a one-time thing and this is, I beleve, made clear in the upload interface. We are sometimes able to withdraw such images where other free images can be found, leaving the originals superfluous for the encyclopaedia, but without good alternatives that is unlikely to receive much support at this stage. Sorry, that's one of the many little gotchas associated with rights releases. Guy (Help!) 15:27, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both for your concern. These images present a conundrum as they come from the same copyrighted material as the body of material deleted from the Walker article. They are slightly modified versions of the pictures that appear in the book. It seems therefore, that they bear the same copyright violation as the other material deleted. Let me say that all the material in question comes from a copyright that I own. The text was cited properly under references in the same manner that other (also deleted) souces were cited. The person who lodged the copyright violation may wish to lodge another one in regard to the images. It would be consistent with matters as they now stand. I have been informed that the material would be acceptable if I were willing to release the entire copyrighted work including rights for commercial use to Wikipedia. I am not willing to do this --Mcumpston (talk) 18:12, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For your images, you have already done so. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 18:21, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Moving images to Wikimedia Commons

[edit]

Hi there, Mcumpston. I'd just like to let you know that I'm moving most/all of the images you've released into the public domain over to Wikimedia Commons, where they'll find a wider audience for use and have more specialized care. Thanks for your contributions, and I'd just like to say I hope you choose to come back at some point in time and contribute more of your expertise to firearms-related articles. —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 19:01, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[Image:Rifled musket actions.jpg]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 20:34, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Image:Rugerdis1.jpg

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Image:Rugerdis1.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Rugerdis1.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 20:42, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cool picture.

[edit]

Where did you get the picture of the Old West reenactor in the full-length duster? The duster seems really nice and I was hoping you (or the reenactor, assuming you know him) could give me the make and model. 173.70.43.176 (talk) 21:37, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
