Qualifier of what property
[edit]Should this be used as a qualifier of position held (P39)? Or member of (P463)? Or maybe of instance of (P31)? I think it should be limited to one of them, so we can have a reasonable amount of consistency. --Yair rand (talk) 18:07, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think is more member of (P463), since it is more for the base MP and not the minister. I made a exemple of how I think it should be used.
Ruth Ellen Brosseau property: member of value : House of Commons of Canada qualifier : electoral district value : Bertier—Maskinongé qualifier : start date value : 2 may 2011
Feel free to comment. --Fralambert (talk) 20:30, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- I don't quite understand how member of (P463) is more appropriate than position held (P39). How would your example be preferable to this:
Ruth Ellen Brosseau property: office held value : Member of the House of Commons of Canada qualifier : electoral district value : Bertier—Maskinongé qualifier : start date value : 2 may 2011
? --Yair rand (talk) 22:01, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- We don't have really a item on member of Parliament (MP), but House of Commons (Q383590) and 41st Canadian Parliament (Q2816776) exist. Il think position held (P39) should be reserved to some officiel Parliament, like Leader of the Official Opposition (Q2506651), Prime Minister of Canada (Q839078) or event the whip (Q1433693). --23:02, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- Currently, position held (P39) doesn't appear to be used like that. For example, many items have position held (P39) : Italian senator for life (Q826589). --Yair rand (talk) 23:23, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- I guess this is a matter of how the languages are used and different kinds of offices are regarded. "Senator" maybe more sounds like an "office held" than "member of House of Commons of Canada" does. But I would like to treat these as equal, no matter how they are named. I have no strong opinion in which to use, as long as we use the same globally. The Swedish name: "Parlmentsledamot" is an "office held" with the word "member of" included in the name, but with the word "ledamot" instead of "medlem", which is more formal. -- Lavallen (block) 08:46, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Broaden to "representing group or district" ?

What if the person is not officially representing the electoral district?
[edit]In Germany there is the situation that politicians run for the German Bundestag (Q154797) in a specific electoral district, but make it in the parliament, even if they lose in their district.
Example: Anton Hofreiter (Q103519) was candidate for constituency for the Bundestag election München-Land (Q1008436), but lost, so the district is represented by Florian Hahn (Q1429695). Anton Hofreiter (Q103519) however became MP by the Bavarian "Landesliste". He has a office in constituency for the Bundestag election München-Land (Q1008436) like every official representative of any electoral district... (further reading: electoral system of Germany (Q481428))
Question: Means electoral district (P768) only, that they won in this district, or that they represent the district, even if they have not won? --Derfesl (talk) 18:11, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
P768 as qualifier

Use as qualifier for office contested (P541)
[edit]- Previous discussion: Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Politics_infoboxes#Election_-_constituency_relation
Should this property be used as a qualifier for office contested (P541) in items for elections? Like position held (P39), office contested (P541) points to the item for a relevant position, so this seems like it may be a natural extension. (Currently, the description for P768 specifies only using this to qualify P39.) --Yair rand (talk) 21:26, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Yair rand: as it doesn't look like there's any objection to this, perhaps we should go ahead with formalising this as an acceptable approach? --Oravrattas (talk) 11:58, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
- Edited the description. --Yair rand (talk) 22:50, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Broadening scope of property
[edit]Perhaps this could be used as a main value on election pages, to describe the district contested? I'm going to expand the scope of the property to allow this, but feel free to revert if there's another acceptable property. I don't see why this could not serve that function, though. Elli (talk) 15:34, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hm, looks like office contested (P541) does this, so I won't modify this. I added this as a "see also". Elli (talk) 15:39, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
- On second thought, that doesn't quite work - "Texas's 6th congressional district" wouldn't be a valid value, only "representative for Texas's 6th congressional district". Thoughts? Elli (talk) 15:41, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
