Helvetica 係一隻好常見嘅冇腳字[4] 字款，由瑞士哈氏字型[暫譯]（德文：Haas’sche Schriftgiesserei[5]）嘅設計師 Max Miedinger 喺 1957年整出嚟嘅，美術指導係佢老細 Eduard Hoffmann[5][6]。
套字款最初個名叫 Neue Haas Grotesk（哈氏新黑體）[6]，係同呢隻叫 Akzidenz Grotesk 字款掙市場[1]。1959年，哈氏想佢哋套字款喺 Linotype 排字機都用得，於是同德國嘅 Stempel 公司傾掂整個 Linotype 版本[1]，之後，1960年，德國嗰便話個名唔方便賣國際市場，建議改叫 Helvetia（瑞士），哈氏覺得太揚，於是用咗建議嘅形容詞式，叫 Helvetica[6]。
1960年其實唔淨止改咗名，新名嘅 Helvetica 其實只係哈氏新黑體嘅簡化版，原因係 Linotype 機有好多限制，好多嘢要簡化，甚至要重新做過，甚至之後喺電腦用嘅 PostScript 版都承襲哂呢啲限制同改動，並唔係1957年嘅鉛字版本[1]。21世紀嘅兩個衍生版本 Neue Haas Grotesk 同 Helvetica Now 嘅好多新功能其實都唔係新功能，只係將套字款還原返到好似1957年嘅原版咁[1][3]。
