Peak power demand declines 10% to 206GW as rains hit north India

After a heatwave, heavy rain reduced power demand, with peak falling to 206 GW from 250 GW. The India Meteorological Department predicts stable temperatures amid heavy rainfall. Southern regions saw a monsoon onset, lowering consumption. Neighbouring regions contributed significantly to power supply, aided by high coal stocks at thermal plants and increased CIL supplies.

Adequate coal stock available, can meet 18.5 days' requirements of thermal power plants: Government

The Centre said that there is sufficient coal reserves for domestic thermal power plants, with stocks at 44.46 million tonnes lasting 18.5 days at current consumption rates, a 33 per cent increase from last year. Coal production increased by 10.58 per cent in the June quarter. Measures have been taken to ensure 98.67 MT stock availability at mines, representing a 33.5 per cent increase from last year. Coordination between coal, railways, and power ministries aims to maintain high coal stock levels at power plants.

India's power consumption rises nearly 9pc to 152.38 billion units in June

The highest supply in a day (peak power demand met) also rose to 245.41 GW in June 2024 against 223.29 GW in the year-ago month. The peak power demand was recorded at 224.10 GW in June 2023. The peak power demand touched an all-time high of 250.20GW in May this year. The previous all-time high peak power demand of 243.27 GW was recorded in September 2023.

Continue blending of 4 per cent imported coal till October 15, government tells power plants

Efficiently managing coal blending requirements and supply logistics is crucial for meeting peak power demand. Maintaining a balance between coal receipt and consumption at domestic coal-based plants is essential for uninterrupted power generation across the country.

Delhi's peak power demand grew 3.8x on hot and humid days in last 12 months: Report

Delhi's peak electricity demand surged due to temperature variations, with peak demand increasing by 711 MW on hot and humid days, 506 MW on cold days, and 188 MW on moderate days. The analysis by IEEFA highlighted the necessity of enhancing utility-scale solar power to meet rising demands and mitigate the impact of heatwaves.
