- Kamal Haasan first appeared on the silver screen as a child artist in the 1960 movie Kalathur Kannamma. He also won the National Award in the best child artist category for his performance in the movie
- After appearing in a few other films as a child artist, Haasan debuted as a lead actor with the 1974 Malayalam movie Kanyakumari. He won the best actor award at the Filmfare Awards South for this role
- He gained prominence through his acting in the 1975 Tamil movie Apoorva Raagangal and also won the best actor Filmfare Awards South for his role in the movie
