Mamata Banerjee's Journey so far ...
    • Mamata Banerjee's father was a freedom fighter and died when she was just 17. Her mother Gayatri Devi, who supported the family, played a vital role in her upbringing
    • She earned a bachelor's degree in law and a master’s in arts from the University of Calcutta
    • She was involved in politics while still in school and was inducted into the West Bengal Chhatra Parishad when she was in Jogamaya Devi College and worked as a working committee member from 1977-83
    • She then took up various positions in West Bengal Congress before being selected to contest from the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency in 1984. She defeated veteran CPM leader Somnath Chatterjee and became one of India's youngest parliamentarians
    • Mamata — popularly known as Didi (elder sister) — was re-elected as a Lower House member from the South Kolkata Parliamentary Constituency in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009. She held important portfolios in the Union Cabinet, including that of the Railway Minister
    • Annoyed by the policies of the ruling CPM and pushed to the brink by some Congress leaders, she toyed with the idea of charting a separate path of her own in the ’90s. She founded the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in 1997 after the Congress high command in Delhi refused to let her assume the state unit's leadership
    • In December 2006, she spearheaded a mass movement and staged a 25-day hunger strike demanding the return of 347 acres acquired by Tata Motors to set up a factory in Singur to manufacture its cheap car, the Nano
    • Eventually, the Tatas moved out of Bengal, but the issue aided Mamata to galvanise her cadres, thereby helping her to make a comeback from near political oblivion
    • In 2007, violence erupted in Nandigram over reports of land acquisition for an SEZ by Indonesia's Salim group, leaving over 10 dead and several injured. Her popularity grew when she played a crucial role in the agitation
    • With her pet slogan, Maa Mati Manush (mother, land and people), Mamata led her party to one of the most stunning verdicts in Indian electoral history with a landslide win in the 2011 West Bengal assembly elections
    • She ended the Left Front's uninterrupted 34-year-old rule, decimating the red citadel in West Bengal. On May 20, 2011, Mamata was sworn-in as the Chief Minister, becoming the first woman CM of the state
    • She launched several schemes for the poor of West Bengal, like Swasthya Sathi, promising healthcare to all the citizens of the state; Kanyashree, giving education and freedom to women, Khadya Sathi, that promises food for all, and many more
    • Despite the BJP's all-out push in West Bengal, Didi single-handedly guided the Trinamool Congress back to power in 2016 and 2021. She, however, lost the Nandigram seat to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari

    Before you go ...
    • Mamata was bludgeoned and an attempt was made to kill her by a CPM thug at Hazra Crossing in south Kolkata in 1990. The attack left her with a fractured skull
    • In 2012, Time magazine named her as one of the most influential people in the world
    • Despite being a busy politician, Mamata has been a prolific writer, painter and poet, she has written more than 20 books in Bengali and English. Several of her paintings have been auctioned, the proceeds for which have been used for social causes
