    While men had a monopoly over it for a long time, this wardrobe hero found its heroine in Marie Antoinette—yes, the erstwhile enthusiast of cake—who apparently lost her head over a white ruffled cotton robe de gaulle that she wore in a 1783 portrait. As all things Marie, it was considered scandalous, but it paved the way for the white shirt in women’s wardrobe.
