Cybertron bears witness to a clash of Titans.

Synopsis

Kup explains to his audience the nature of War Titans, that they are tough and armed with enough firepower to take on a neutron star. However, Iaconus is just a straight-up berserker. Standing over Iacon City, the newly-awoken Iaconus draws his sword and smashes the nearest building with it. Maccadam observes that the day has finally arrived and laments that he doesn't know how this will end.

Inside the Titan's mind, Windblade watches as he randomly smashes every building in sight and commands him to listen, telling him that Cybertron is under attack and that it is his job to defend it. She points out the distant form of Judge Starscream and Iaconus immediately charges towards his new enemy. Seeing the colossal 'bot heading towards him, Judge Starscream panics and calls the Scientist, demanding he do something. Intrigued by the sight of Iaconus, which he claims has never happened before in any of the Quintessons' conquests, the Scientist reassures Starscream he is prepared for all eventualities and that the Titan won't be a problem as he presses a panel at his computer.

A ball of fire hurtles from the sky and land at Iaconus's feet. As it turns out, Croaton has been enslaved and upgraded by the Quintessons and squares off against Iaconus, summoning an energy whip which momentarily immobilizes his opponent. As Iaconus uses his sword to slice himself free, Croaton pulls out a large cannon which knocks Iaconus onto his back. Windblade urges him to get up but Iaconus states he is not so easily defeated. As Croaton approaches, ready to down his enemy, Iaconus kicks him hard and uses the advantage to let loose with every missile he has, knocking Croaton over. Iaconus tries to use his own cannon to slay Croaton, only for the other Titan to summon an energy shield, deflecting the attack. In the Quintesson prison, the captive Autobots and Decepticons are awed.

Meanwhile in the strange other universe, Optimus Prime is having difficulties with gravity. As he declares their present location his least favorite universe, Bumblebee sees Wheeljack stirring. The scientist is wowed by the sight of the universe before using his grappling gun to make his way over to Optimus, Bumblebee, and the multiversal portal. Asking if they hadn't just considered using that to get home, Wheeljack activates the portal. As they step through, Wheeljack admits he doesn't know where they will wind up. But wherever they do, it will be home-sweet-home. As it turns out, the "where" that Wheeljack has taken them is the Scientist's laboratory. As Optimus sees Iaconus and Croaton fighting, the Scientist appears, ready to inflict some science on the Autobots.

Outside, Iaconus and Croaton continue brawling, their weapons forgotten in favour of simply punching one another. The sight of "his" Titan losing incenses Judge Starscream enough to make him go yell at Croaton, completely forgetting the captive Arcee, leaving her subject to the whims of gravity. Fortunately, Grimlock manages to catch her. While Judge Starscream rages at Croaton, Maccadam casually strolls into the Quintesson prison, which gets him noticed by the guards. Unconcerned, Maccadam transforms and makes short work of the Quintesson Prosecutors and Sharkticons. That done, he tells the Autobots and Decepticons that it has been his pleasure to serve them and it is time to get them out.

Starscream tries pointing out Croaton's armaments to the enslaved Titan, and in Iaconus's mind, Windblade tells the War Titan to attack him. So Iaconus punches Starscream, sending him flying into the distance, though this gives Croaton the opening to tackle him. In their simulated prison, Hot Rod and Soundwave have buffed away nearly all of the Rust Plague... save for one spot they missed. As the wall of rust approaches them, they seem doomed... Until they notice that they have been freed from the simulation by their comrades.

As the Cybertronians leave, Hot Rod notices Maccadam staying behind and calls for the bartender to come with him. Cryptic to the last, he responds that his time has come as Croaton deflects another shot from Iaconus that heads toward the prison. Saying it is not yet Hot Rod's time, Maccadam shoves him out of the way. The beam hits and, with a massive explosion, Maccadam perishes. Inside Iaconus's mind, Windblade hears the War Titan rage at the loss of his last citizen, before noticing Croaton charging at Iaconus again.

Iaconus will never get head again.

Inside the Scientist's lair, Optimus and Bumblebee gun down copy after copy of the Scientist, but Optimus notes they cannot keep going on this way. Looking at one of the corpses, Wheeljack discovers it is giving off a signal. Following it to a panel in the floor, Wheeljack opens it and finds a subchamber. Investigating further, he finds the true form of the Scientist, a diminutive spider thing. The Scientist panics, summoning tendrils to try and immobilize Wheeljack, but the Autobot effortlessly overcomes them. Once Wheeljack brings his fist down on the Quintesson, the various bodies of the Scientist shut down in response to their controller's death. Optimus, Bumblebee, and Wheeljack leave to find the others, unaware of the Scientist's leftover collection of alternate Soundwaves, who all reactivate...

Iaconus manages to overpower Croaton and prepares to deal the finishing blow to his opponent as Judge Starscream returns. Angrily demanding if he must do everything himself, Starscream summons a portion of unspace, which surrounds Iaconus's head. Having been decapitated, the last War Titan's body falls backwards and shifts back into its city mode. With his opponent gone, Croaton spots Optimus, Bumblebee and Wheeljack emerging from the tower's ruins and advances.

Quotes

"War Titans! Like regular Titans, only jam-packed with enough firepower to toast the flares off a neutron star! But this one, Iaconus was the ultimate berserker! Never gives up, fights on, no matter the odds."

Kup lets out his inner fanboy.

"Hmm. The day I have long forseen has come. Too bad I won't know how it ends..."

Maccadam being omninous.

"The Titan! It's coming! Do something!"
"Interesting. This has never happened before."
"Hurry you fool!"
"I am always prepared for infinite possibilities. The Titan... will not be a problem."

The Scientist assures Starscream this isn't his first universal rodeo.

"I wish Optimus could've seen that. Titan vs Titan! I'm talking a whole city fighting another city! But Optimus had a fight of his own... with gravity."

Kup is tired of Optimus' antics.

Bumblebee: This doesn't look like home...
Optimus: By the Primes! The Titans clash!
(multiple Scientists appear)
Scientist: Welcome to my laboratory.

—We told you he says it a lot.

Notes

Continuity notes

  • The Scientist's impressive collection of preserved Soundwaves was established in "The Scientist". At the time, there was no clear indication they were actually still alive.

Transformers references

  • Iaconus' reversion to city mode after his head's destruction echoes rigor morphis from the 2005 IDW continuity.
  • The reveal of the Scientist's true nature—a tiny, apparently organic creature—might come as a surprise, but it's not without some precedent: the 2014 novel Transformers: Retribution similarly revealed that the Quintesson Inquirata was, in reality, a diminutive organic who piloted a variety of larger bodies in order to fool Cybertronian visitors to Aquatron.

Other trivia

  • Not to nitpick, but if Maccadam hadn't been standing exactly where he stood and had just moved like Hot Rod said, he wouldn't have gotten himself killed in the first place. But then, he is the type of guy who can see the future.

Animation and technical errors

  • In "The Scientist", the Scientist said that he did not have a blue Soundwave yet. But in this episode, there are two blue Soundwaves colored in the exact same shade as our Soundwave.
