യൂറോപ്പിലെ ഏറ്റവും നീളമേറിയ നദികളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് റൈൻ (ഡച്ച്: Rijn; French: Rhin; ജർമ്മൻ: Rhein; ഇറ്റാലിയൻ: Reno; ലത്തീൻ: Rhenus; Romansh: Rain). സ്വിറ്റ്സർലാന്റിലെ ആൽപ്സ് പർവതനിരകളിൽ ഉത്ഭവിച്ച് നെതർലാന്റ്സിലെ വടക്കൻ കടലിൽ പതിക്കുന്ന ഈ നദി യൂറോപ്പിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട നദികളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. സെക്കന്റിൽ ശരാശരി 2,000 ഘന മീറ്ററിലധികം ജലം പുറന്തള്ളുന്ന ഈ നദിയുടെ നീളം 1,233 കിലോമീറ്റർ (766 മൈൽ) ആണ്.[3][4]
റൈനും ഡാന്യൂബും ചേർന്നാണ് റോമാ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ വടക്കൻ അതിർത്തി രൂപവത്കരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. അക്കാലം മുതൽ ഉൾനാട്ടിലേക്ക് ചരക്കുകൾ കടത്തുന്നതിനുള്ള ഒരു പ്രധാന ജലഗതാഗത മാർഗ്ഗമാണ് റൈൻ. ഒരു പ്രതിരോധമായും നിലകൊണ്ട റൈൻ പല അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര, ആഭ്യന്തര അതിർത്തികൾക്കു�� അടിസ്ഥാനമായിരുന്നു. റൈൻ നദിക്കരയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ചരിത്രാതീതകാലത്തെ കോട്ടകൾ, ജലഗതാഗതമാർഗ്ഗം എന്ന നിലയിൽ അതിനുണ്ടായിരുന്ന പ്രാധാന്യത്തെ വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു.
മൈൻ, നെക്കാർ, മൊസേൽ എന്നിവ റൈൻ നദിയുടെ പ്രധാന പോഷകനദികളാണ്.
