Gurugram: A same-sex couple tied the knot in a full-fledged Indian wedding in Haryana’s Gurugram. The wedding ceremony included rituals like Mehendi and more. This was the wedding of Kavita Tappu and Anju Sharma, despite India not legally recognising same-sex marriages. Starting with haldi, the wedding continued late into the night with traditional rituals, culminating in their vows at Chhoti Panchayat Dharamshala on April 24.
Pictures of their wedding have been shared widely on social media, making them the talk of the town. However, the wedding was not as easy as it looked. Hours before the marriage, the priest withdrew, saying that he was injured in an accident. According to Anju, the priest had been informed by them beforehand that it was a same-sex marriage, Times of India quoted. However, a friend stepped in and convinced two other priests to officiate.
Kavita, a makeup artist from Fatehabad, and Anju, an actor from Gurgaon, met in 2020 during a shoot for Anju's YouTube channel. The two in their late 30s struck a connection soon after they met. It was a little fuzzy in the beginning, but they admitted their feelings and started living together. Anju said she was devastated after losing her nephew and mother in the same year. She recalled that it was Kavita who supported her in the difficult time. Their families also became involved, with Anju's mother accepting Kavita as her daughter-in-law.
However, Kavita’s mother did not agree for the wedding, but her father and brother supported them during the wedding. Their story has inspired other LGBTQ+ couples to speak out. Anju advises women in similar situations to openly communicate with their parents and patiently seek their approval. Despite the legal challenges in India, Kavita and Anju are also planning to start a family through adoption.
